Threat of Malaria
Keywords:
Burden of Malaria, Malaria Control, National Anti-Malaria ProgramAbstract
Background: In India, approximately 2 million confirmed malaria cases and 1,000 deaths are reported annually, although the WHO South-East Asia Regional Office estimates 15 million cases and 20,000 deaths each year. India contributes 77% of all malaria cases in Southeast Asia.
Objective: To evaluate the influence of management practices in reducing malaria morbidity and mortality.
Results: Malaria morbidity decreased by 43% in Enhanced Malaria Control Project (EMCP) districts and by 38% nationwide. Nearly one million fewer malaria cases were diagnosed in 2004 compared with 1997. The states of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra achieved reductions in malaria morbidity of 65–70%. The editorial emphasizes that sustained surveillance, prompt diagnosis and treatment, vector control, community participation, and strengthened public health infrastructure are essential to maintain these gains and prevent resurgence.
