Challenging Cholesterol

Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors, Cholesterol Lowering Goal, Lipid MeasurementAbstract
Background: Obesity, particularly abdominal adiposity, is associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and other features of the metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, is increasing at epidemic proportions.
Objectives: To identify the risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD).
Methodology: Evidence from research on hypercholesterolemia indicates that elevated LDL cholesterol is a major cause of CHD. Individuals with CHD or CHD risk equivalents have the lowest recommended LDL cholesterol goal (<100 mg/dL).
Results: The LDL cholesterol goal for individuals with multiple (two or more) risk factors is <130 mg/dL. Individuals with 0–1 risk factor have a 10-year CHD risk of <10%, with an LDL cholesterol goal of <160 mg/dL.
