Musings on Protection and Better Patient Care

Abstract

The article discusses the growing challenges faced by the medical profession, including violence against healthcare workers, medicolegal issues, defensive medical practice, and the need for stronger professional protection. The author emphasizes the role of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in safeguarding medical practitioners and advocates for legislation to protect doctors from assaults and unjust litigation.

The perspective also highlights the importance of quality improvement in patient care, arguing that healthcare quality depends not only on scientific knowledge but also on compassionate clinical practice. Traditional quality assurance methods such as setting and monitoring standards, statistical quality review, medical audits, peer review, credentialing and accreditation, mortality and morbidity audits, risk management, nursing audits, utilization review, and monitoring of nosocomial infections are discussed as essential strategies for improving healthcare delivery. The author concludes that adopting systematic quality management practices can enhance patient satisfaction, improve healthcare outcomes, and strengthen the medical profession.
